The Myth of Auftragstaktik and the history of Mission Command - a discussion
Part of Germans at War Week Part 1 (Part 2 coming in June 2022)

This show consists of three parts

Part 1 - Rick Herrera takes us through the Prussian origins of Auftragstaktik and Mission Command and whether or not it had any influence on the US Civil War and the 1905 US Field Service Regulations. He then goes on to discuss the myth of the clean Wehrmacht.

Part 2 - Philip Blood takes us through the the British saga referencing people like Basil Liddell-Hart, the interrogation of German POWs and the various eras of postwar writing and study. He makes the argument that Auftragstaktik was a postwar construction.

Part 3 - A loose discussion about the myth, Nazi fan-boys and historiography.

Dr Philip Blood is an independent historian, writer and lecturer working out of Aachen, German. He has worked as historical advisor to the Association of the US Army and also served as Chief Administrator and Senior Fellow with the American Academy in Berlin, under Henry Kissinger and Richard Holbrooke.

Ricardo A. Herrera is Professor of Military History at the School of Advanced Military Studies, US Army Command and General Staff College and an award-winning author. He is the author of Feeding Washington’s Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778 (Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 2021), For Liberty and the Republic: The American Citizen as Soldier, 1775-1861 (New York: New York University Press, 2015), and of several articles and chapters on US military history. Rick Herrera has also been awarded several residential research fellowships.
