DATE DAY: Treetop Adventure with a Vestibular Disorder // BEFORE the BLOOD PATCH Procedures

Hey everyone! Jen here… today's video is all about seizing the moment and making the most of life before a big medical procedure. If you’re a long time subscriber, you would know that I've got a vestibular disorder, and I'm gearing up for a blood patch procedure to fix a CSF leak in my spine. (if not, you might want to go back and check out my other videos for better understanding…) Tomorrow, it's off to see the specialist for that, but today? Today is all about adventure and living it up.

So, hubby and I decided to make the most of our last day of freedom before the procedure. We left our worries behind, had a friend and a babysitter look after our little ones, and sneaked away for a few hours of pure adrenaline-pumping fun. We knew that after the procedure, I might need to take it easy, so this was our version of a "baby moon" before slowing down. We wanted one last crazy day up in the trees, and that's exactly what we did.

This balance challenge was fun to do with known vestibular deficiencies. You may notice in the videos that I often had a finger touch the rope even though it wasn't always bearing any weight for me or helping me with balance. Because of my brain pressure changing so much, I over-compensate with my eyes in order to balance and walk. When the ground is stable, I balance by using my eyes and the feeling of the ground under my feet.

In this treetop course, the ground was unstable, and I couldn't use my eyes as easily either because the ground was so far away to see clearly! My finger touching the rope gave my brain a little extra input of information about where my body was. Just having that frame of reference is super helpful for helping me balance. It's part of why I use a walker, and have a counterbalance handle on my service dog's vest.
