Turning A Shallow Bowl with a Deep Channel: The Cherry Rock n’ Resin Bowl Cherry with a polished rock and resin rim inlay
New lathe, new work! I upgraded from my Delta Midi Lathe to the Laguna Revo 18/36 and I could not be happier with the first project to come off of it! I’ve had this idea in my head for quite a while but never had the right blank available. I finally decided to make a blank from some of the kiln dried lumber I have left from my flat-work days. The widest boards I had were curly maple and cherry, which is featured in this video. I bookmatched the slabs when I glued up the blanks, which adds a nice touch with the mirrored grain pattern. Then I laid out the design, a shallow bowl with a relatively wide rim and a deep channel to accept the inlay.
The rich color of the cherry looks AMAZING with the polished rocks set in resin, and the waterfall edge on the inside of the rim is just fantastic. This is definitely one of my favorite pieces!
