Most Important Difference Between Group and Individual Coaching

The most important difference between one-on-one coaching and what you might call team or group, and I call one-to-many coaching is the customer. Who is it?

Of course, you know in one-on-one, it's the individual sitting across from you and you've worked very hard to figure out how to be fully present, create trust and safety for them, and to listen deeply, to be curious on their behalf. Well done.

All of that is relevant to your work in a one-to-many context. But here's the thing. Your customer is the field of interaction among the members of the group or the team. Now, I might also say to you that making a distinction between group or team not actually all that important for you in terms of how you as a coach show up and interact and engage. Very important in terms of contracting and how you define success and how you establish what the basis is for how you're working together. So yes, be clear about the differences between a team and a group, but in reality, the most important thing to understand is your attention is going to go to understanding the flow of the interaction, to recognizing that there is a diverse group of people who are showing up to do something that they have a shared purpose around.

And your work as a coach is to reveal the synergy that is available because that collection of people has come together and the way you recognize it, notice it and invite them to notice it, become aware of it is by recognizing that there is something that's only available because of how they're interacting with each other.

Your client in one-to-many work is that pattern level of interaction that you then help them to synthesize by all the dimensions of perceiving that you possess as a coach practitioner.
