Violence is escalating at some Tucson hookah lounges and spilling out into parking lots where it is impacting nearby businesses. Now, the Tucson City Council is considering an ordinance to limit hookah lounges' hours of operation and the ages of its patrons.
A month ago four people were shot at Arizona Hookah Lounge on Speedway and Swan. So far no arrests have been made and the council tells News 4 Tucson there are at least 10 other hookah lounges just like this one, where every weekend the police are called out for disturbances.
Tucson nightlife may end with the last call, but for those who don't want to go home, late-night hookah lounges that don't close until 4 a.m. keep the party going.
"It's anarchy on the weekends."
"Kids that are a lot younger, can't get into the clubs or done with the clubs one of the two."
And there are at least 10 hookah lounges across Tucson that have become a hotbed for criminal activity as seen in these surveillance videos taken from nearby businesses, where employees say they're fed up with the chaos.
Searching for a solution is council member Karin Uhlich spearheading an effort to stop the violence.
