Today, I’ve decided to do a second session on the Nasturtiums from last week.
So often in the Friday live sessions, I have to paint pretty quickly in order to get something useful and interesting done in the time.
But on my own, with no cameras, I don’t paint like that.
I’m slow.
Considered.
Agonizing, even.
There are long periods when nothing happens at all, I'm just looking at the painting and being present with it, waiting for the next move to become apparent.
So for a bit of balance today, I’m going to paint for you as if I was painting for myself.
And I’ll do my best to vocalise the decisions as I make them - assuming there are decisions, sometimes things just happen.
Also I’ve been itching to resolve some areas of the painting and it’s been nagging at me all week.
Materials:
Surface: Painting from last week.
Medium: Linseed oil and a little solvent
Brushes and tools: Hog bristle filberts, flat synthetics, silicon paint shapers, I’ve got a new ppalette knife to try, steel pan scrub and whatever else grabs my fancy!
Paint:
White - lead preferred, titanium will do it
Cad yellow
Your most intense, middle value red. I’ll be using naphthol. Pyrroles are very good too.
Possibly permanent orange
Quinacridone rose, or other high chroma blue-red
Transparent red oxide (non-negotiable!)
Green gold
Phthalo green
Raw umber
Ivory black

The app I use to investigate the colour is called ChromaMagic. You can find it on the Apple and Google Play stores, and there is also a Windows version. It's very inexpensive and extremely useful! If you struggle at all with judging values and colours, or with mixing, this is a great tool to help you calibrate your estimates by giving you immediate feedback on how close your guesses come.
You can get the Munsell value scale - which allows you to translate values from the app directly to your painting - from Paul Centore on Ebay here, also very inexpensive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223003792036
