History Repeating in Re:Zero - Which Characters are Stepping into Roles from 400 Years Ago?

In Re:Zero, as Subaru learns more about the isekai world he has been summoned to, a period in time 400 years ago always seems to come up, making it very important both to him, and for Re Zero theory videos! This was the age of witches, when the witches of sin like Echidna, Satella, Daphne, Sekhmet and Minerva were alive, and when the great calamity occurred, with the witch of envy trying to devour the world before being sealed by the dragon Volcanica, the sage Flugel and the sword saint Reid Astrea. We hear about all kinds of other Re Zero characters from that time, such as Hoshin of the Wastes, another man from our world like Subaru and Al, who founded Kararagi, and there are also important Re:Zero characters from that period who are still around in one form or another, like Roswaal, Beatrice and Puck. It is quite a common device or trope in fantasy stories that an event from the past will be key to the current timeline, and that the main characters will need to serve as 'new and improved' versions of characters from the past to try to reach a solution that ends the cycle of history repeating itself. In this video, I give some analysis about how this type of story works and why this applies in Re:Zero, and also look at theories about which characters from the current cast will fill the shoes of the characters from 400 years ago, including Subaru, Emilia, Garfiel, Reinhard, Otto, and Beatrice.
