This video highlights installation of a Strutmasters suspension conversion kit on the FRONT two wheels of a Mercedes SL500. This video covers model years 2002 to 2012 of the SL 500 vehicles.
Important: There may have been updates to the installation process since this video was made. Please refer to the instructions that come with the kit for the most up to date installation procedure.
Also: Since Mercedes can have several variations regarding drivetrain (4 Matic or rear wheel drive) and type of active suspension (Airmatic or ABC), we strongly recommend obtaining the Vehicle ID number (VIN) and call Strutmasters at 866-597-2397 before placing an order. This will ensure you get the correct product for your exact vehicle.
This beautiful Mercedes had a failed factory suspension when it arrived at our Strutmasters facility in North Carolina. We replaced the expensive and complicated factory parts with our exclusive Strutmasters suspension conversion system. This eliminates the need to worry about replacing all of the high-dollar suspension electronics when they go bad.
Our products are designed to be simple to install, provide a great ride quality and save customers thousands of dollars versus OE replacement parts. We work on customer vehicles every day to design new products and to stay on top of the latest suspension challenges. We share what we learn by updating our instructions regularly and offering tech support to our customers.
With our exclusive design, NO SWAY BAR KIT IS NEEDED! We use a double action coil spring -- big coil at the top for normal, slower speed driving and smaller coil on the bottom for performance at higher speeds. When the car tries to dip, these exclusive American-made coil springs go to work and push the vehicle back level.
By the way: Our shops tell us it normally takes an additional 12 to 14 labor hours to install the sway bars front and rear. During sway bar installation, you would need to unhook the motor and drop the fuel tank to install. The added labor time alone can be upwards of $1000 to $2000 depending upon rates in your area. The vast majority of our customers have determined adding a sway bar is not cost effective or necessary.
Strutmasters founder Chip Lofton was the first to offer a fully assembled suspension conversion kit when the air suspension failed on his personal Lincoln in 1999. The company is still headquartered in North Carolina, where Lofton leads a team that strives to provide the best products and customer service in the industry. They use premium steel coil springs that are made exclusively for them in America. All of their conversion kits are assembled in small batches by experienced employees to ensure the highest quality.
We have learned over the years that electronically-controlled factory active suspension systems are very complicated and expensive! When they fail, many vehicles will experience an immediate loss of ride height and become undriveable. Older, high-mileage vehicles will generally require multiple repairs to keep the system working. Some customers have spent upwards of five to eight thousand dollars or more (parts and labor) chasing a failing factory system.
Don't learn the hard way! Avoid multiple repairs that come with fixing the existing system (especially with cheap, imitation parts). Fix It Once, Fix It Right with the original -- Strutmasters!
