Similarities Between Narcissists and Alcoholics | Link Between Alcoholism and Narcissism

Did you know there are similarities between narcissists and alcoholics? Narcissistic personality disorder, or narcissism, and addiction often occur together. In this video I discuss link between alcoholism and narcissism. I discuss what the supply is for the alcoholic as well as the narcissist and how the supply keeps the alcoholic and narcissist able to cope in a world that provides many struggles. Addiction is difficult for anyone, but even harder when someone has a mental health disorder or mental health symptoms that prevents them being able to effectively get support from others to help them through their addictions. Why do narcissists have problems with alcohol? This is in part because they don’t have effective stress management techniques they can use when they experience situations that might expose their low self-esteem and vulnerabilities. Narcissistic personality disorder and alcoholism make for a toxic partner and a toxic relationship. Toxic relationships knowing when to let go is hard enough but when you add in a narcissist with an alcohol problem it makes it even harder. Why does a narcissist get drunk when angry? Because they have no other way to hide the feelings they have and can’t deal with. Will a narcissist change is a common question I hear and this answer is further complicated by the narcissist who has problems with alcohol because that is another thing the narcissist has to work through in order to change. If you can understand the link between narcissism and alcohol then you can understand why the narcissist acts the way they do and make changes in yourself that will help you better manage the situation.
