To improve the efficiency of cattle production among South Carolina cattle producers and to help contribute towards the nation’s growing demand for quality and nutritious protein, SC State University Research & Extension hosted a Beef Cattle Production and Management Workshop in the program’s Upstate region, Saturday, March 19 at a local farm (228 Cooley Bridge Road, Pelzer, S.C., 29669) for farmers committed to raising beef cattle in a safe and environmentally sustainable environment.
The beef cattle industry has experienced a number of challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to the South Carolina Cattlemen’s Association. The beef and cattle industry has managed to produce around half a billion pounds of beef annually for the past two decades, however, consumer demand for beef has increased by 12 percent since 2021. Biosecurity, diseases, parasites and land management are putting the cattle industry at risk of producing quality beef and creating the need for more resources to keep up with consumer demand. As a means of mitigating some of the challenges cattle producers may be experiencing, SC State 1890 Extension's Upstate region has partnered with several industry leaders for an educational workshop on cattle management and production.
Attendees received key information from SC State 1890 Extension, SC Farm Bureau, Upstate Forever, Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Clemson Extension and Ark Veterinary and Dr. Ralph Noble, dean of the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology at Fort Valley State University.
