Although the seventies were beginning to break wide open for women in bluegrass, their roles as musicians were still often confined to all-female groups or bands that included family or partners. Banjo player Lee Lenker (1955–2008) was an exception. From 1976 until 1982 she played banjo in the Buffalo Chipkickers, an otherwise all-male band based in State College, Pennsylvania.
