When hauling a tractor or any cargo on an open road, there's a serious mistake that many people make without realizing just how dangerous it can be: loading with negative tongue weight. What Is Negative Tongue Weight? When towing a trailer, one of the most critical safety guidelines is to ensure that at least 10% of the load's total weight is on the tongue of the trailer and your tow vehicle’s hitch. This down pressure stabilizes the entire load and helps keep your trailer under control while driving. If the weight on the tongue falls below that 10% threshold, you’re dealing with negative tongue weight – and that puts you in a seriously dangerous situation.
