"The Legend of the Coconut Tree"
Maeva, Manava, Ia Orana!
We are Vaipuna No Te Here, and we present "The Legend of the Coconut Tree." Our story begins with the prince of eels, who is promised to Hina, a princess with beautiful, long hair. However, Hina is frightened by the prince's appearance and she runs and takes refuge with Hiro, the fishing god. Hiro promises to help her, and when the eel comes looking for her, Hiro catches him with a fishing line made of Hina's hair. Before passing, the prince of eels curses his future bride, telling her that she may be repulsed by him, but one day she will be compelled to kiss him. Hiro gives the head of the eel in a basket to Hina, warning her not to put it on the ground. But in traveling, Hina forgets, and places it on the sand of the beach. From the head of the eel, the first shoots of the coconut palm emerged. The coconuts that sprouted resembled the head of the eel, thus, through drinking from the coconut, the curse of the eel had come true.
