'Theyyam' (Malayalam: തെയ്യം) is a popular ritual performance art form of worship of folk Gods and Goddesses in North Kerala (predominant in the Kolathunadu area- Kasaragod and Kannur Districts, Mananthavady, Vatakara and Koyilandy Taluks) as well as in South Canara and Kodagu regions of Karnataka, India, as a living cult with several years old traditions, rituals and customs.

Ruling clans establishes their own shrines and temples (called Ara/ Kavu/ Devasthanam) for Theyyam deities where Gods and Goddesses are propitiated and non-satvic rituals and customs are performed. The first part of the performance is known as 'Vellattam' / 'Thottam'. After the sun sets, the particular Theyyam artist known as 'Koladhari', along with the drummers recites the particular ritual song which describes the myths and legends of the deity of the shrine or the folk deity to be propitiated. Then he appears with elaborated make-up and costumes, comes in front of the shrine and gradually metamorphoses. After certain rituals, Koladhari places the head-dress on his head and starts dancing according to folk musical instruments played in a certain rhythm. A theyyam is a combination of playing musical instruments, vocal recitations and dance with peculiar makeup and costumes.

There are approximately 400 different forms of Theyyam (Theyyakkolams) performed in Kerala. 'Kandanar Kelan' (കണ്ടനാർ കേളൻ) is a popular Theyyam. In most of the temples, Theyyam festival is conducted either annually/ biennially/ triennially [Kaliyatta (Kannur)/ Thirayatta (Kozhikode)/ Theyyamkettu (Kasaragod) Maholsavam- കളിയാട്ട / തിറയാട്ട / തെയ്യംകെട്ട് മഹോത്സവം] or in the intervals of twelve or more years (Perumkaliyatta Maholsavam- പെരുങ്കളിയാട്ട മഹോത്സവം). Theyyam season begins from the tenth day of the Malayalam month Thulam (October), known as 'Patham Udhayam' (പത്താം ഉദയം) and lasts up to seven months till the middle of Edavam (May-June) month.
