Annotated Comments:
Clones: As many of you have pointed out in my review of Blade Runner 2049, I use the terminology “clone” improperly. The correct term is Artificial Gene Synthesis which incredibly already exists. Both cloning and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have the same result of DNA proliferation but PCR does not require a preexisting DNA sequence. Because of this PCR is not limited to existing organisms. Fascinating stuff…again, none of it covered in the movie.

Are we programmed: In many aspects, I do feel that humans are biologically programmed, our sequence of parameters and response are just incredibly complex so it appears we have free will. To that extent, it’s possible that the flip side of my “hologram vs replicant” programming theory is that the movie showcases that “programming” is irrelevant. It’s the impact and consequence of events, experiences, and affecting each other’s program parameters that matter more.

Cybernetic Individuals: In my review, I say that in a shared Alien/Bladerunner universe, cybernetic AI is not invented for another 100 years. I was referencing the timeline of Ash in Alien. This is not definitely not correct as David’s Prometheus predates Ash. In the Alien universe, the first patent for the Method and Apparatus For Cybernetic Individuals was granted to the Weyland Corporation in 2023. This still aligns with a shared universe theory as the BladeRunner blackout occurred in 2022 and resulted in the ban of replicants. This would give rise to a need for a cybernetic work force.
