La chiesa, costruita su un'area anticamente adibita a necropoli punica e poi cristiana, fu edificata durante il periodo bizantino a metà del VI secolo d.C. : subì un ampliamento longitudinale tra l'IX e il X secolo e si presenta ancora oggi nella sua forma altomedievale che ne fa una delle più antiche della Sardegna.
The church, built on an area formerly used as a Punic and then Christian necropolis, was constructed during the Byzantine period in the mid-6th century d.C. : it underwent a longitudinal expansion between the 9th and 10th centuries and still presents itself today in its early medieval form which makes it one of the oldest in Sardinia.
