My tendency is to fill my plate. I'm sure there is some connection there to my food addiction and overeating, but whether it's food or my schedule- I fill it up. I am single, so have the time and energy to do so and can easily fall into the trap that we must be busy to be valuable. If there is space, we must fill it. But, when WE fill every space in our life, there is no room for God. No ability for HIM to move things, reorient things, speak to us. And the chaotic jumbled picture that is our life stays jumbled. We can live in that chaos for a season, but not forever. Eventually it catches up and we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, run down and not finding joy in the things that SHOULD bring us joy and life.
We almost never live with intentional space in our life. But, we must! Step out from the belief that you must prove your value by your productivity, by how many things you checked off your to do list. Even things that are good, things that are life giving and enjoyable sometimes have to be set down. And that is the hardest part. When you know you have no margin but you don't want to give anything up. Saying yes to one thing means saying no to something else and I don't want God to be the thing I say no to which means I sometimes have to say no to things that I really, really want to do.
