How to Choose Grade 100 Chain Hooks for Cranes & Lifting | Essential Rigging Tools Vol. 4

If you are familiar with cranes and rigging, you've probably heard the phrases "above the hook" and "below the hook." Slings are a great example of a below the hook item, whereas above the hook is essentially everything above the sling. Most slings are outfitted with hooks, especially chain slings, and that’s what we’re focusing on in this post.

Grade 100 fittings, including hooks, are sized and rated to match a given diameter of chain. In this video, we feature ½” (one-half inch) Grade 100 hooks that have a 15,000 lbs Working Load Limit (WLL).

Even though these hooks are all designed for use with ½” Grade 100 chain, they really do function differently with unique features and benefits. We will discuss the latching mechanism, swivel vs. non-swivel and other features that help with safety and/or ease of use.
