In this week’s Orton-Gillingham inspired lesson, my students had a blast working with the Rhyming Word Queen!
Through this interactive activity, students practiced identifying and decoding rhyming words while applying their phonics knowledge of the /c/, /g/, /j/, /f/, /th/, and /qu/ sounds.
Students first listened for rhymes, then read and underlined the graphemes that represented the rhyming phonemes, connecting phonological awareness and phonics in a meaningful way.
This activity is perfect for small-group instruction, literacy centers, or OG intervention time — and it’s a fun, hands-on way to build confidence with sound-symbol correspondence!
Skills Covered:
Rhyming Word Identification
Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondence
Decoding Accuracy
Sound Pattern Recognition
