Do you know, dear listeners, which is more important in music - the melody, or the musician performing it? What about harmony and rhythm? In fact, all these elements are important in music, but the melody has always been the fundamental principle, and always will be. The great German composer Richard Wagner famously remarked that "Melody is the only form of music; without melody, music is inconceivable; music and melody are inseparable."
Springtime Fountain is one of those songs that grabs our attention with its melodious and expressive melody.
The chosen time signature, 7/8, is not in the tradition of smooth jazz, but this does prevent the music from being perceived easily and harmoniously. On the contrary - the melody fits into the time signature very naturally, and it flows like a spring brook in Part One. It calls to mind well-known songs such as
"Seven Days" by Sting, or "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck, both written in 5/4. The melodies in these compositions, despite the non-standard time signature, are calm and natural-sounding.
As for the performance, legendary American soprano saxophonist Eric Marienthal adds a special melodiousness and warmth. His playing immediately evokes a warm spring day after a thunderstorm, when the air is fresh and clean.
The deep harmonies in Part Two give Springtime Fountain a certain astringency, and are vaguely reminiscent of the music of Joe Zawinul and his group Weather Report.
An interesting approach can be observed in the back-to-back solos by Marienthal and pianist Dmitry Ilugdin. The musicians improvise on harmonies that were not stated in any of the previous parts, and it's simply brilliant!
The rules of composition state that a musical work should always have a climax, a culmination. Here, the peak culmination in the song is a kind of coda played by the wonderful American guitarist Mike Miller.
Springtime Fountain is music that conveys joy, happiness, and the mood of spring - music that you, dear listener, will definitely enjoy!
