Just before I started Cal Arts I was living with my cousin Jeff. He brought home a record by Elton John, his first one. I was knocked out by the songs, performances, arrangements and sound of the LP. The song that really stood out and was his first hit, “Your Song”. It’s a great example of slash chords, having another note in the bass other than the root. The record was inspiring at the time. Besides the glitz and glamour, Elton John is a great songwriter, marvelous vocalist, and a good musician. I wish him the best on his final tour – to be completed when our world calms down.
