Transforming conflict from one that could be destructive to one that is constructive requires the understanding needs of each of the parties involved. Knowing the stages of the conflict – from a mere disagreement to a crisis, can be helpful in knowing what kind of conflict resolution process to apply. Knowing the source of the conflict – how the conflict originated – from different understandings, lack of information, culture, or structure – is also helpful in knowing how to tackle the problem. In Restorative Justice, the goal is to repair any harms done because of conflict through cooperation by the people directly involved and also the community. It usually involves the questions asked are what happened, what harm was done, and what can be done to make the situation right. This process can be helpful in schools in addressing a wide range of issues such as bullying, concerns over behavior issues, and more.
The Domestic Harmonizer Program (DHP) is created by The Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI). Rooted in restorative practices the DHP works with students and teachers and parents to build a deep understanding of conflict resolution education (CRE). By helping to create peaceful opportunities for exchange and learning, schools can reduce incidents of destructive conflict on campus.
