John William King, 44, (left and on arrest, inset bottom) was executed on Wednesday in Huntsville, Texas for the truck-dragging murder of James Byrd Jr. (inset top) which stunned America in 1998. King was the ringleader of three men who chained Byrd to the back of a pick-up truck and hauled him for three miles down back roads in Jasper. Byrd's sister Clara Taylor (right) spoke after the execution, calling King's death 'peaceful and dignified unlike the savage, brutal, inhumane murder of James.' She said her brother had been 'thrown around like a sack of potatoes' as he was dragged behind the truck.
