The former world No. 1 and two-time champion of the ATP 500 event was scheduled to receive the tournament’s newly introduced ‘Fuera Pista’ award and participate in a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of his first title in Barcelona. Borg arrived in the city over the weekend to support his 21-year-old son Leo, who was competing in the qualifying rounds after being granted a wildcard entry. Leo fell short in a close contest, losing 7-5, 7-6(1) to Britain’s Jacob Fearnley while his father watched courtside. During his brief stay, Borg also caught up with familiar faces from his Laver Cup days, including stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, and was seen in photos with them at the event. A tribute was scheduled for Tuesday to celebrate Borg’s 1975 victory at the tournament, but this has now been cancelled due to his early exit. Spanish tennis journalist Fernando Murciego reported that Borg “brought forward his departure” and the planned ceremony has been called off. Speaking with Mundo Deportivo on Monday, before his abrupt departure, Borg reflected on his return to the event. “My son was playing in the qualifying round. And for me, this tournament has always held a special place in my life,” he said. “I first came here as a 14-year-old junior. I’ve played this tournament many times, and winning here is very meaningful—not just for Spanish players but for all Europeans.
