In today's chess opening video we look at the Delayed Wing Gambit, which in my opinion is the most underrated gambit in chess! This chess opening gambit for white is against the Sicilian Defense, which is the most popular chess opening for black against e4! So, firstly, this is not some weird gambit against something people see twice in their lifetime. The Sicilian Defense is extremely popular, strong, and respected in the world of chess opening theory. And, there are many chess openings against it (that are good!) including the Grand Prix Attack, Main Line, Alapin Variation, etc! But with this Delayed Wing Gambit opening, we take a totally different approach, making the Sicilian Defense player uncomfortable much of the time. In this video I give three reasons for why I believe this chess gambit for white against the Sicilian Defense is so strong....

1. THE DELAYED WING GAMBIT IS RARE - This goes a long way! We have all heard of the Stafford Gambit. We have all heard of the Englund Gambit, Budapest Gambit, Scotch Gambit, King's Gambit, etc. This means that people have seen it, studied it, and prepared for it (much of the time). However, something nobody has ever heard of? This gives you the advantage in preparation, and the Sicilian Defense player might not be too concerned about it.... until they find themselves in a losing position.

2. THE DELAYED WING GAMBIT IS SOUND - This is not a gambit in which case we merely "hope" the opponent falls for 1 of our 5 opening traps. This is a chess opening gambit that has some strength behind the punch, with GM Simon Williams playing it in some of the most important games of his life. After the crazy looking 2. a3!?, we have an even position according to the engine - but with our advantage in prep? I'll take white.

3. THE DELAYED WING GAMBIT IS FUN - If you are not enjoying the positions and games you're reaching, what are you doing? First off, chess is a game meant to be enjoyed. Second, players tend to perform better when they play something they like! If you try and play the "top world chess championship opening" but hate the opening, you won't play well! Play something you like, even when people call you crazy. The results will follow.
