Ted Cruz believes that Republicans are in for, in his words, a “bloodbath” in next year’s midterm elections if Donald Trump’s tariffs remain in effect. As it stands right now, the tariffs aren’t going anywhere, and that means the likelihood of a recession is becoming even greater, which is exactly what Cruz fears. But Republicans have been complicit in all of this, and Trump was clear during the campaign that this is what he would do. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

On multiple occasions since Donald Trump instituted the tariffs last Wednesday, his administration has made it abundantly clear that these tariffs are here to stay. Even during a q and a with reporters in the White House on Monday when they said, Hey, your administration's given us mixed messages. Sometimes you say they're permanent, sometimes you say they're up for negotiation, which is it? And Trump said, well, maybe it's both. So we have no clarity on how long these tariffs are gonna be in place, or if there's even things other countries could do as part of negotiations to get the tariffs to go away. So as far as we know, they're here to stay. And of course, so too is the economic destruction that they're causing. And this, in turn, has caused Republican Senator Ted Cruz to suggest that the 2026 midterms could be a political bloodbath for the Republican party.
And yes, he did use the term bloodbath. Here is what Ted Cruz said on a recent episode of his podcast this week that talking about the tariffs is a massive tax increase on the American people. I worry there are voices within the administration that want to see these tariffs continue forever and ever and ever. Okay. Right off the top before I continue so far, Ted Cruz, you're bating a thousand man. Like you're, you're correct. You're correct, you're correct. There are voices in the administration that want him to go on forever. That voice belongs to Peter Navarro and his fake alter e ego, uh, Ron Vara. And it is a massive tax increase on the American people. Ted Cruz is correct again, then he continues. If we go into a recession, a particularly bad recession, 2026, in all likelihood politically would be a bloodbath. If we're in the middle of a recession and people are hurting badly, they punish the party in power again.
You're correct. A hundred percent. And, uh, just to kind of expand upon your point there, the reason they punish the party in power is because the party in power is responsible. Okay? It's not just like, oh, we need somebody to blame. No, you guys are the ones to blame. So it, it's not a, a leap of faith for the public to blame the people in power that literally instituted the policies, Ted. Okay? So yeah, you're correct. They will punish you, but you need to be more honest. That because we deserve it is how that sentence actually should have ended. Ted, you were, you were so close to getting it, but I hope I helped you out there next time. Add, because we deserve it. And speaking of deserving it, Ted,
You've also suggested that, hey, well Trump's just using these as leverage. No, he is not. He's absolutely not anybody who says that is lying to you. Trump doesn't know what he's doing or why he's doing it, which is why he is given us seven different conflicting reasons as to why he's enacted the tariffs in the first place. It's because, uh, Canada needs to be the 51st state. It's because we gotta, we gotta stop the drugs coming across the border. Uh, it's because we gotta stop the people coming across the border. Uh, it, it's because of the trade deficits. Uh, it it's because we want American companies to come back here. Uh, it's because they're, they're treating us unfairly over there. It's because, uh, they put tariffs on us, just different reason every other day completely contradict, uh, contradictory to what he had said the day before. So it's stupid. He's not using these as leverage. He's doing it to flex the muscle that he thinks he has.
