New Bujinkan Soke - Some Thoughts

The head of our Bujinkan organization, Hatsumi Soke, is the inheritor of nine Japanese martial lineages (ryuha). Recently, he decided to break up these ryuha by appointing new Soke for each one. This is something unprecedented (that I'm aware of) and a very significant event. The depth involved in passing such an honor cannot be overstated. The Bujinkan is truly evolving into a new phase and we are all witnessing history in the making.

However, as significant and incredible this is, there is also a lot of misunderstanding and even controversy. People try to predict what will happen, wonder if there will be an actual Soke of the Bujinkan named, and so on. But, the truth is that we have no place to expect anything or make any demands. Yes, there is still a Soke of the Bujinkan and his name is Masaaki Hatsumi. He also is still the Soke of all nine ryuha. That has never changed. In fact, the Bujinkan Hombu office still processes ranking certificates and prior to COVID-19, the Hombu Dojo had classes taught by several of the Dai-Shihan. Once things open back up, I am confident those new Soke will continue to teach Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu at the Hombu. That will not change.

In this video, I provide my insights regarding the awarding of new Soke, what I think this means for all of us, and I offer my tips on how to move forward individually and as a community. It is truly an exciting time to be in the Bujinkan!
