🛫 SEA KING – STILL WATCHING THE OCEANS (2025)
First flying for the Republic in 1975, the Sea King replaced the Wessex HAS.3 in several maritime roles and went on to become a legend of Malagasy service.
At its 1990 peak, 48 airframes were in operation.
Today, fourteen upgraded Sea King AEW-7/ASUW aircraft remain in operational reserve, spread across:
• Ministry of Oil – Kerguelen Detachment (4) for offshore patrol and SAR
• Space Farce (8) for recovery, security, and base defence
• Home Islands Security Wing (6) for emergency response
Its boat-hull fuselage and proven reliability make it ideal for open-sea and polar work — a design too useful to retire.
Even after half a century, the Sea King continues to live up to the Republic’s motto:
“Eyes on the sea. Hands always ready.”
