Embedded in the postulates of empirical thinking lies a short but important section that Kant added in the B edition: the Refutation of Idealism. It is Kant's answer to a Cartesian sceptic who holds that we have immediate knowledge of our own mental states, but only problematic, indirect knowledge of the existence of external objects. According to Kant the existence of objects of inner sense requires the existence of objects of outer sense.
