Pabbi Forest was declared to be a reserved forest vide notification No. 109/ F of 6th March, 1879 under section 34 of the Indian Forest Act VII of 1878 published in Punjab Gazette of 06-03-1879 part-I page 75.

The Pabbi forest spreading over 38,000 acres will be developed as a tourist destination with the provision of basic facilities and rehabilitation of its lake and at least 16 ponds.
The then Sara-i-Alamgir assistant commissioner had developed a small park, a jogging track, some wooden bridges and other facilities in the area with the financial assistance of overseas Pakistanis back in 2015-16.

The Pabbi forest park had attracted a large number of locals and people from surrounding districts for picnicking.

However, the successive administrations did not pay attention towards the maintenance of the park.

Pabbi Forest Park has some vestiges of the Mughal era which are gradually disappearing. They have a large pool which is inaccessible to common people. It is said to have been built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir. At some distance there was also a baoli whose traces have disappeared. It is also said that former President of Pakistan Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan and former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto were also imprisoned here for some time after their overthrow, but now that prison has also been demolished.

On one side of the forest is the GT Road and on the other side the Lahore Rawalpindi Railway Line. There used to be a Bani Bangla railway station here but now it has been declared obsolete.
