Cindy Blackstock has fought for 30 years for Indigenous children’s equal rights to good schools and health, to be with their families and feel pride in their language and culture. She says: "Canada is a good country, but Indigenous children do not get the equal access to good school, health care or even clean water". Cindy and the organization she leads, First Nations Family and Children Caring Society, combats discrimination, raises awareness and pursues legal cases together with Elders,leaders and young people – Indigenous children and other Canadian children.
Cindy has advocated and won legal cases helping 165,000 First Nations children to get better schools and resources needed for a safe childhood. Other Indigenous children have also seen their rights strengthened. The government has apologised and must give Indigenous children everything they need to thrive. fight for children’s rights.
The World’s Children’s Prize (WCP) Program is one of the the world’s largest annual programs educating and empowering children to become humane changemakers– standing standing up for the equal value of all people, the rights of the child, human rights, democracy, and sustainable development. Patrons of the World’s Children’s Prize include H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden, Malala Yousafzai, the late Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, Xanana Gusmão, Desmond Tutu and Sweden’s Prime Minister. Since the year 2000, close to 50 million children have participated in the annual WCP Program.
