Several years ago, the German and Bakweri forces had a memorable clash at a ravine in Buea called Nimonge. The Bakweri warriors led by fearless Kuva Likenye killed Karl Gravanreuth (the German office who led the 1891 expedition), repulsed the German attack and chased the soldiers across the Fako Mountain as they fled back to Victoria (now Limbe).
Oral history enlists Kuva as the 2nd paramount Ruler in Buea. Over a century gone, the Bakweris along the eastern slope of the mountian are now in no small numbers. We hear the birds chirping, the elephants trumpeting...there’s the sound of abundance of rain. This is the coronation of the 7th Ruler of Buea, as I witnessed it.
