For the 1999 Winston 500, ESPN presented a new feature called ESPN NASCAR Spotlight. They eavesdropped on championship leader Dale Jarrett, crew chief Todd Parrott, and spotter Bob Jeffrey.
As a kid, this was an essential NASCAR learning moment for me as it visualized the quintessential driver-spotter-crew chief communications. For example, we heard how Todd Parrott was trying to coax Frankie Stoddard to go for four tires instead of two. Also, we heard Bob Jeffrey go to Ricky Rudd's spotter to notify that Rudd had a tire rub in which Rudd's spotter was unaware of. Talladega was perfect for this since a restrictor plate race is so chaotic.
It did make the broadcast a bit Jarrett-focused at times, but I don't think it really affected the overall tone. I thought it was extremely informative and I wanted to share those parts of the broadcast as one video.
Of course, when you're live, you never know what audio you get. Yes, this was the race where Todd Parrott said "go get me a set of 20-bleed shocks for the front of this motherf*cker," or something to that effect. Todd was fined $5,000 by NASCAR for the expletive.
