Despite the apparent similarity between the viola da gamba and the cello, the differences in physiognomy, technique and function are very substantial. In the central third of the 18th century, the swan song of the former coexisted with the full autonomy of the latter, as exemplified in a masterful way by the catalog of Johann Sebastian Bach.
