Architect Marica McKeel’s clients wanted to use Philip Johnson’s “Glass House” as inspiration for their Hudson Valley, New York, home. Like its inspiration, McKeel’s final design was a minimalist, glass-focused modern home with nature as much a part of the architecture as the windows and doors framing it.
The front entrance is hidden as you pull up to the home. Once you walk in the door, you’re overlooking the view from an 11-foot floor-to-ceiling window. Homeowners and visitors can experience views to the east and west from these large windows. Sliding doors in the living space and in the front entryway open to both of the home’s decks to create a sense of indoor-outdoor living.
“Indoor-outdoor living is really what we’re all after up here in the Hudson Valley, so our projects have a lot of windows,” said McKeel of Studio MM. “They’re the number one feature in our homes that really start to bring the outdoors in.”
Energy efficiency and sustainability were important to McKeel and her clients as they were designing the home. The Marvin Ultimate collection allowed McKeel to achieve large window and door sizes and still achieve optimal energy performance.
