As temperatures begin to fall, the need for safe, warm shelter rises across Maryland. Each winter, more individuals and families seek refuge from the cold—and this year is no exception.
At the Laurel Multiservice Center (LMSC), the impact of winter is already being felt. During its first winter in operation, the number of unhoused individuals seeking services at the center doubled. In response to the growing need, LMSC’s winter shelters are set to open by mid-December.
To raise awareness and foster community dialogue, the Multiservice Center recently hosted their inaugural Homelessness Awareness Panel. The event featured powerful stories from individuals who have experienced homelessness firsthand, offering insight into the challenges they faced and
the resilience they’ve shown.
Among the speakers was Donald Whitehead, Jr., chair of the City’s Homelessness Task Force and executive director of the National Coalition for the Homeless. Drawing from his own lived experience with homelessness, Whitehead emphasized the urgent need for expanded shelter services during the colder months and throughout the year.
