The Oberpostdirektion Hamburg had its first headquarters in a building at the Stephansplatz, which was no longer sufficient for the accommodation of the existing staff since the 1950s.
In the course of the construction of the City Nord, the German Federal Post also planned a new building for a modern administration building.
Of the drafts submitted in the architectural competition, "none could convince" so that only two second prizes were awarded. After their revision, the concept of architects Gerhard Weber and Georg Kuttinger was awarded in March 1970.

The building began on July 2, 1974, the topping-out ceremony was in April 1976, and the arrival of the postal workers began in July 1977.
The building is "one of the most striking phenomena in the city north" because of its size and shape 170 m, it is thus 15 m longer than the well-known HEW-Haus and the third longest building in the city north.
With 12 floors and a height of 52 m, it is the second highest building there.

In the postpyramid, more than 1,400 post-staff members worked, and only about 150 in the 2010s. The building had become too large over the years as a result of restructuring and savings at the post office, which led to the idea of building the building separate.

In 2011 the plant was cleared due to a lack of fire protection measures and the remaining postal workers had to move out temporarily.
In the following years, only a quarter of the building area was used, parts of the offices continued to be used by the Post Office, but above all the underground car park as a place for long-term parking.
In January 2016, the project developer "Hamburg-Team" announced that the office building will be demolished and a new building will be built.

70 per cent apartments and 30 per cent offices were planned. The developer of the new building is to become a cooperation under the leadership of Otto Wulff Bauunternehmung.
