In this video, I pit two real spring reverb and tremolo circuits against each other in a full A/B shootout: the built-in Vox AC15 combo amp vs the modern-yet-vintage-inspired White Whale V2 from Hungry Robot. Both offer analog spring reverb and lush tremolo, but how do they compare in tone, depth, and vibe?
I test both setups live using my Fender Stratocaster, walking through their entire range of settings—from subtle shimmer to full surf splash and pulsating trem depth.
🎧 What You’ll Hear:
Clean Strat tones with both trem and reverb engaged
Subtle ambient textures and deep vintage drips
A/B comparisons with matching levels and tempo
No talking—just playing, so you can hear every nuance
🛠️ Gear Specs Comparison:
Vox AC15 (Custom Series Combo):
Reverb: Analog spring tank (single-spring, driver circuit via op-amp)
Tremolo: Tube-driven, bias-modulated
Controls: Reverb level; Trem depth/speed
Tube complement: 12AX7 preamp, EL84 power
Output: 15 watts, Celestion speaker
White Whale V2 (Crazy Circuits Pedals):
Reverb: Real spring tank (standalone, tank mounted inside pedal housing)
Tremolo: Optical tremolo (independent of reverb circuit)
Controls: Separate reverb and trem rate/depth/intensity
Footswitchable: Individual or combined reverb/trem
Extras: Tap tempo, expression pedal input, stereo outs
🎯 Both deliver authentic spring splash and lush, musical trem, but with very different formats and features. Whether you’re into amp-born tone or pedalboard flexibility, this video gives you a direct sound comparison to help you decide what fits your vibe.
