"Science” is claimed to be a uniquely Western system of knowing. This talk shows how “science” is not exclusively Western, but is constituted of appropriations, erasures and exchange with non-Western knowledge traditions.
Decolonising science, therefore, calls for the acknowledgement of such hidden histories. It also aims to undo the violent colonial legacies of “science” through the celebration of diverse knowledge traditions and practices. Amitangshu teaches courses on political ecology, science and technology studies, and decolonization, and coordinates a PhD course on Decolonizing Science in the Netherlands. In his writings and research he explores the ruptured relationship between people and their environment, while documenting sites and struggles where plural knowledge systems and practices reclaim hope for a sustainable future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
