As part of Conversations on COVID-19, a webinar series hosted by the Caltech Science Exchange, Christopher Barnes, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Hanna Gray Postdoctoral Fellow, discussed his research into vaccines and antibodies by explaining what happens when an antibody meets a virus and how vaccines teach the body how to make particular antibodies.
Barnes, who is part of the lab of Pamela Bjorkman, the David Baltimore Professor of Biology and Bioengineering, uses high-resolution imaging techniques to investigate how viruses infect humans, and how the body's immune system responds to viral infections. He focuses on the study of antibodies to neutralize HIV-1 and, more recently, SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here, Barnes talks with Caltech science writer Lori Dajose (BS '15) about how his work can help improve COVID-19 vaccinations and make treatments better.
