@MFEGoingDeep this was the biggest gathering of Lake trout I have witnessed to date. After I had spent a few days filming Salmon spawning I shifted my focus to Lakers but my hot spot from last year I kept checking yielded nothing. I started exploring some other areas I thought they might be and following a hunch and with a little bit of luck I stumbled onto this area here. I came back a few different times over a couple weeks and this was the peak day of activity and numbers but there was always a good amount in here. I watched these guys for hours and it really gets to a point of not even knowing where to look as there are just so many fish in all directions.
The average depth was around 10’, there was spawning substrate all around in more shallow water but they seemed to hold in this spot here sort of a staging area. You’ll notice a few of them have chunks taken out of their tails, these are from other Lake trout biting them. I saw this happen once from a distance, they do heal and grow back after some time. This surprised me as I have seen Salmon chase and nip at each other but not Lakers.
It’ll be interesting to see how many return to the area to spawn next year!
