Birth and Early Life

Sudama, also known as Kuchela, was born in a very poor Brahmin family. From childhood, he was gentle, learned, and devoted to God. He went to the gurukul (hermitage) for education, where he became a close friend of Prince Krishna of the Yadava dynasty.

Gurukul Incident

Once, during their days in the hermitage, Sudama and Krishna went to collect wood. A heavy storm broke out, and they spent the night under a tree, shivering and drenched, but never leaving each other’s side. This event strengthened their bond of friendship forever.

Family Life

After completing his education, Sudama lived a very poor household life. His wife, Susheela, was also pious but they faced extreme poverty, often with no food at home. One day, she humbly suggested,
“Your childhood friend Krishna is now the king of Dwarka. If you visit him, he will surely help us.”

At first Sudama hesitated, but later, on his wife’s insistence, he agreed to go. She tied a small bundle of beaten rice (poha or flattened rice) as a humble gift for Krishna.

Sudama in Dwarka

When Sudama reached Dwarka, Krishna saw him from afar. Forgetting his royal throne, Krishna ran barefoot to welcome his dear friend. He embraced Sudama with great love, washed his feet with devotion, and seated him with honor.

Krishna then took the small bundle of beaten rice, and with immense joy, ate it as if it were the greatest feast. By this loving act, Krishna silently blessed Sudama with endless prosperity.

Sudama’s Humility

Sudama never asked Krishna for wealth. He had only come to see his friend. When he returned home, he was surprised to see his poor hut transformed into a grand palace, his family adorned with wealth and happiness—all by Krishna’s grace.
