March 10, 1959, Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, was attacked and occupied by China. Lakha Lama and many other Tibetans fled Tibet to India in the following days. The journey over the Himalayas without food and warm clothing was difficult and there was a constant risk of being bombed by Chinese warplanes.
When Lakha Lama later had to provide a birthdate for his passport, he choose March 10, 1942, because he did not know his true birthday, and also because that date represented the beginning of a whole new life for him.
Lakha is speaking here at the Phendeling Center for Tibetan Buddhism in Copenhagen. Lakha Lama is the spiritual leader of the center.
