The first Latina artist to be signed to Hollywood Records, Myra rose to prominence in 2001 with her cover of Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" for the film Recess: School's Out. Her debut self-titled album was released in 2001 with a Spanish version released later in the year. During this time, she toured with Aaron Carter, appeared in the film Max Keeble's Big Move and was featured on the Radio Disney Live! 2001 World Tour.

Released in 2001, her debut album received positive reviews from critics, but failed to chart due to limited promotion from the record label. Two singles were released.
