Photographing Kolkata’s Local Train Journeys I Ep. 5 I Shot on

Welcome to Episode 5 of Photograph Kolkata with Shivam, where I hop aboard Kolkata’s iconic circular train route—a journey that loops through the city along the river, connecting its historic heart to quieter edges. This route is more than just a commute; it’s a window into Kolkata’s daily life, offering soft light through old train windows, fascinating commuters, and the unique aesthetics of the Indian railway coaches and stations.

In this episode, I spend a couple of hours photographing the journey from BBD Bag Station to Majerhat and back, capturing candid moments of intimacy, rhythm, and quiet drama as life unfolds inside and outside the train. The interplay of light, shadows, textures, and the human stories makes this ride a dream for photographers looking to capture authentic urban life.
