A drug called tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, dissolves blood clots in the brain and is the first line treatment for stroke. While it does not prevent death, tPA can mean the difference between a patient having debilitating side effects from stroke or carrying on with a normal life. The drug has been around for two decades but many doctors remain skittish to use it because it can cause catastrophic bleeding in the brain. tPA is the standard of care at St. Luke’s Hospital, one of the most comprehensive stroke treatment centers in the metro area. A team led by a St. Luke’s Hospital doctor is seeking to calculate risks using a new tool. By Jill Toyosh
