Several other families did too, so the party started early. We took advantage of the nice weather and spent time at the park. Budapest is an easy city to navigate, and there is so much to do. We had roommates for the month. Jill and Declan shared the Airbnb, and it is nice having roommates. We took turns cooking and parenting. It takes a village. Our Airbnb is in a great location in the Jewish Quarter.

We met up with the Sollers, who we met in Bali. Another worldschool reunion for the win! Michael and Lucas found pickleball. I went on a walking tour with my friend Jill that focused on the monuments around Budapest. The kids went to a trampoline park and Henry mastered the back flip. A big focus of the week was shopping for prom outfits. It was exhausting.

The reason we decided to come to Budapest was for the Worldschool Pop-Up Hub in Budapest—and what an unforgettable experience it was. With 100 teens and 40 families from all over the world, the city came alive in a whole new way. It wasn’t just about the sights or the landmarks (though Budapest never disappoints on that front); it was about connection, celebration, community, and prom!

Our kids aren’t in traditional school, and sometimes that raises questions—from others, and ourselves. Are they missing out? Are they getting the same rites of passage that we once looked forward to at their age? That’s why this week meant so much to us. We are intentionally crafting a worldschooling life that blends freedom with meaningful experiences.

While our teens may not be walking through the halls of a conventional high school, we’re ensuring they still have milestones worth remembering—like prom. A real prom, with suits, dresses, dancing, a limo, and all the excited nervous energy you’d expect (More pics from prom next week!). But even more, it was surrounded by a week filled with friendship and shared adventures.

Each day brought new meetups—whether lounging in the park while kids played spike ball, swapping stories, sipping coffee in cozy cafés while comparing notes on travel logistics, or intense board game sessions that sparked laughter and new friendships. We explored the city’s hidden corners and iconic spots, but what stood out most was the joy of being together.

As worldschooling families, we’re not just chasing new destinations. We’re building a global village where our kids find connection, belonging, and shared experiences—no matter where in the world we happen to be. Prom in Budapest wasn’t just a dance; it was a reminder that even outside the classroom, our children can still grow up with the best parts of youth: celebration, community, and memories that last.
