King Charles III delivered the speech from the throne, officially opening Canada's latest session of parliament on Tuesday.
It was the first time a monarch has done so since queen Elizabeth II in 1977. Normally delivered by the governor general — who is the representative of the monarch — the speech laid out the government’s agenda and priorities.
The King’s visit comes at a time when Canada’s sovereignty has been repeatedly threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said multiple times since his re-election that Canada should be the 51st state.
