Just a few years ago, Ikaho Onsen in Gunma, Japan was facing serious issues such as inns shutting down and turning into abandoned buildings, after Japan’s economic bubble burst. Today, however, the area—especially its main street, the “Stone Steps Street”— is bustling with visitors. The number of overnight guests have increased for three consecutive years. We explore what’s behind Ikaho’s transformation.
