Fianarantsoa serves as the gateway to Madagascar’s south. The province is made up of five regions—Atsimo-Atsinanana, Amoron’i Mania, Haute Matsiatra, Ihorombe, and Vatovavy-Fitovinany—and contains 23 districts. Its largest city, also called Fianarantsoa, has a population of just under 200,000. Other well-known cities in the province include Manakara and Mananjary along the scenic east coast.
Fianarantsoa is home to some of Madagascar’s most iconic national parks, including Ranomafana, Isalo, and Andringitra—each offering a unique landscape and ecosystem. The province is culturally rich as well, with major ethnic groups including the Betsimisaraka, Betsileo, Antaisaka, and Bara.
