Fianarantsoa serves as the gateway to Madagascar’s south. The province is made up of five regions—Atsimo-Atsinanana, Amoron’i Mania, Haute Matsiatra, Ihorombe, and Vatovavy-Fitovinany—and contains 23 districts. Its largest city, also called Fianarantsoa, has a population of just under 200,000. Other well-known cities in the province include Manakara and Mananjary along the scenic east coast.
